Childhood
Abdullah Shafique was born on November 20, 1999, in Sialkot, Pakistan, into a Punjabi Muslim Gujjar family. Cricket runs deep in his family as his father, Shafiq Ahmed, was a professional cricketer before becoming a cricket coach, and his uncle Arshad Ali played internationally for the United Arab Emirates.
Abdullah started practicing cricket at the remarkable young age of three under the close guidance of his father, who has coached cricket at GEMS Modern Academy in Dubai since 2003. His father’s dedication to coaching produced numerous international players for the UAE, and that nurturing environment provided Abdullah with a strong foundation for his future in cricket.
Career
Abdullah Shafique’s cricket career began in earnest when he joined the Pakistan Under-19 team at age 16. His first-class debut for Central Punjab came in 2019, where he made an immediate mark by scoring a century.
The following year, he made his Twenty20 debut, scoring an unbeaten 102, becoming the first Pakistani batsman to score centuries on both his first-class and T20 debuts. Abdullah’s international debut in T20 cricket came in 2020 against Zimbabwe, where he scored 41 not out.
In 2021, he earned his Test cap against Bangladesh and quickly solidified his place as an opening batsman through consistent performances. Notably, he scored his first Test century against Australia in 2022 and ended that series with 397 runs.
He continued his success with historic performances, including an unbeaten 160 in a fourth-innings chase against Sri Lanka to secure a Test victory and further centuries against England. Abdullah also played in the Pakistan Super League, contributing to Lahore Qalandars’ titles in 2022 and 2023.
He made his ODI World Cup debut in 2023, marking the occasion with a century and setting a record for the highest successful chase in a World Cup match.
