Childhood
Damir Dzumhur was born on May 20, 1992, in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, during the early days of the Bosnian War. His birth occurred in a hospital near the Zetra Olympic Hall, which was soon after evacuated and bombed. The war heavily influenced his early life as his family endured significant hardships. His father, Nerfid, a tennis coach, was away when Damir was born and did not meet him until nearly one year later. Growing up in a war-torn city, Damir's family created a makeshift tennis court inside a school gym to practice the sport since playing outside was too dangerous. This environment fostered Damir's resilience and passion for tennis from a very young age. Besides tennis, he also enjoyed skiing and football and even had a brief stint as a child actor in Bosnian and German films.
Career
Damir began playing tennis at age five under the coaching of his father, who has run a tennis school since 1994. Damir's potential became evident early on as he participated in local and regional tournaments across Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, and neighboring countries. He rose through the junior ranks, achieving notable success such as winning the unofficial under-12 European Championships in Rome in 2004. He turned professional at age 16 in 2008 and steadily climbed the ATP rankings. Throughout his career, Damir has faced injuries affecting his back, shoulder, and abdomen but has continued to be a top player representing Bosnia and Herzegovina.
