Childhood
Toby Keith Covel was born on July 8, 1961, in Clinton, Oklahoma, to Carolyn Joan and Hubert K. Covel Jr. He was the second of three children and spent part of his early childhood in Fort Smith, Arkansas, before his family moved to Moore, Oklahoma. His grandmother owned a supper club in Fort Smith where Toby developed his love for music, often performing with bands there in his youth. He received his first guitar at the age of eight and attended local schools where he played football and graduated from Moore High School.
Following high school, Toby worked in the Oklahoma oil fields, advancing to a supervisor role before the industry's collapse in the early 1980s. During this period, he also played semi-professional football and pursued music by forming the Easy Money Band, playing regional bars and roadhouses.
Career
Toby Keith's music career took off in the early 1990s when he signed with Mercury Records. His debut album released in 1993 included the hit "Should've Been a Cowboy," which established him in the country music scene.
