Childhood
Luke Skyler Rockhold was born on October 17, 1984, in Santa Cruz, California, into a highly athletic family. His father was a professional basketball player in Europe, while his mother was an avid tennis player. Luke grew up alongside his older brother Matt Rockhold, a professional surfer. From a young age, Luke was exposed to various sports and began training in judo when he was six years old, continuing until he was ten.
He attended Soquel High School, where he joined the wrestling team in seventh grade and simultaneously started learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. While he initially considered pursuing basketball like his father or surfing like his brother, Luke found his calling in martial arts after wrestling for a community college and winning a few Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournaments. As a teenager, he also developed a reputation for being protective and tough, defending his friends and standing up in fights.
Career
Luke Rockhold’s professional MMA career started in 2006 when he joined the American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose, California. He quickly made a name for himself with his striking and grappling skills. He gained notable recognition as the final Strikeforce Middleweight Champion before that promotion was absorbed by the UFC.
Rockhold entered the UFC in 2013 and rose rapidly through the ranks, culminating in winning the UFC Middleweight Championship in 2015 by defeating Chris Weidman.
