Ploiești is a city located in southeastern Romania, between the valleys of the Prahova and Teleajen rivers, north of Bucharest. The city is first documented in the 16th century as a military camp for the army of Michael the Brave, but not until the mid-19th century did the city begin to develop rapidly. Its evolution was accelerated by heavy industrialization, with the world's first industrial scale petroleum refinery being opened in 1856–1857.
