She is the daughter of Judith Ann, a psychiatric nurse, and Jerome Jesse Berry, who worked as a hospital attendant and later as a bus driver. Her parents divorced when she was four years old, and she was raised along with her older sister by their mother. Halle spent much of her childhood in Oakwood, Ohio, attending Bedford High School.
