Childhood
Iga Swiatek was born on May 31, 2001, in Warsaw, Poland, to parents Dorota and Tomasz Swiatek. Her father Tomasz is a former Olympic rower, having competed in the men's quadruple sculls at the 1988 Seoul Summer Olympics, while her mother Dorota is an orthodontist. Iga grew up with an older sister, Agata, who is about three years older and pursued dentistry studies. Their father encouraged both daughters to pursue individual sports, hoping they would become professional athletes. Initially, Iga showed promise as a swimmer but soon switched to tennis, inspired by her sister and driven by her desire to compete with her. She began playing tennis at the age of five and trained at clubs such as Mera Warsaw and Legia Warsaw during her adolescence.
Career
Iga Swiatek turned professional in 2016 and quickly made a name for herself on the ITF and WTA circuits. She won her first professional title in Stockholm in 2016 and clinched multiple ITF titles over the following years. Her breakthrough came in 2018 when she won the girls’ singles title at Wimbledon and the girls’ doubles title at the French Open. That same year, she won a doubles gold medal at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires. Swiatek rose to international prominence in 2020 by winning the French Open singles title without dropping a set, becoming the youngest female Grand Slam singles champion of the 21st century and the first Pole to win a major.
